BUG gun problem..

Just thought i would run my problem by you guys, and see if anyone could help.

I just bought a Kel-Tec P3AT for concealed carry. Went home and set a target about 10 yards away, pulled the trigger, and............................................... .. NOTHING !! ... ejected, and tried again..... NOPE, NADA.... took a look at the 2 cartriges and saw the firing pin was barely striking the primer..

Ok, this is my first gun purchase, and I am getting frustraded. I didnt want to take it back to the store and have them send it back to the manufacturer the same day I bought the gun. I decided to try and fix it myself.

Took the gun apart and looked at the firing pin and spring. From what I could tell the spring looked way too long. So I cut it down till I could get it to fire at least 1 time. Probably cut it down 5 times or more. Now I can get it to fire 4 out of 5 times. Cant cut it down anymore, or the firing pin wont stick out enough for the hammer to hit.

Im probably doing this all wrong, so tell me what you experienced gun fanatics would do in this situation. Im not carrying a gun that wont fire all the time.

KelTec still ships some lemons, but has quick and knowledgeable customer service, at least in my experience. I've emailed them and received free replacement parts that fixed some problems.

Send it back with a letter explaining what you did. Don't try to get over on them.

They will do a fluff and buff and it will come back better than you sent it.

Personally, I would have not started cutting anything. I would have went straight back to the shop or contacted Kel-Tec. At any rate, electric-amish has dispensed the best advice you're going to get.

Simple - if I buy a brand new firearm and it does not work, return it to the shop where you bought it. Yes, you could go to the expense of shipping it back to Keltec, but ever since the freight companies refused to address the problem of employee firearm theft years ago, they STICK IT to the customers. If you are not a FFL holder, you will get raped on shipping charges. Either UPS or FedEx will require you to ship it via air, maybe overnight air. Expect to spend $25-$50 on shipping just to return a defective pistol. I liked things much better when I could just spend $7 or so to ship it UPS Ground.

Your dealer is allowed to ship it USPS Priority Mail (~$5-$10).

CONSTRUCTION

The P-3AT has five main component groups: barrel, slide, firing mechanism, grip, and magazine. The barrel is made of SAE 4140 ordnance steel, heat treated to 48 HRC. The slide is also 4140 steel, and contains the firing pin and the extractor.

The rectangular frame is machined from solid 7075-T6 aluminum and houses the firing mechanism.

The trigger connects via a transfer bar to the hammer. The hammer is driven by a novel free floating extension spring. The light weight firing pin transmits the energy of the hammer to ignite the primer. After firing, the hammer block holds the hammer away from the firing pin, providing a mechanical safety.

Return it so The Factory can properly repair it. Be forthright explaining to them the problem and your attempted repair. This will help them zero in on a solution.

FWIW, if this is your one and only gun then it is not your BUG.
Also, saying "BUG Gun" is an acronym-nym.
Like ETA Arrival Time or ATM Machine. Think about it.

Do a "Buff and fluff" search here

before you send it back...

It will function just fine if you empower it...

Re: BUG gun problem..

I'd first email customer service with a detailed problem description, just to see whether it's really necessary to send it in or whether they can send you replacement parts. I did wind up sending one in, and it took a couple months to get it back; but for another, the free replacement parts arrived within days and fixed the problems completely.

Re: BUG gun problem..

I would have taken it immediately back to the dealer and demanded a replacement--screw waiting for THEM to ship it back to Keltec for you.

However, since you've messed around with it, that's not going to happen and I wouldn't blame them. You need to contact Keltec, fess up and see what they can do to fix it--perhaps they can send you parts to fix it OR will have you ship to them and fix. In the meantime, spend an extra $75-$100 and get yourself a Ruger LCP--what the P3AT was meant to be.
